EVIDENCE FOR CHIROPRACTIC
There is extensive evidence in the literature supporting the efficacy of chiropractic for the treatment of muscoloskeletal conditions. According to the British Chiropractic Association (2006) “There is more evidence-based research to support chiropractic treatment than any other complementary disciplines”.
The following ones are but a few of the articles available from medical journals like Spine, British Medical Journal, Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics and many more.
- Koes B W , van Tulder MW, Thomas S (2006) 'Diagnosis and Treatment of Low Back Pain'. British Medical Journal (BMJ), 332:1439-1434 (June). An article reviewing over 1000 ramdomized controlled trials of all treatments for low back pain. Spinal manipulation is recommended for for both acute and chronic low back pain. Read it here
- National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) "Non-rigid stabilisation procedures for the treatment of low back pain". Here it is stated that chiropractic intervention and posture training can limit episodes of acute pain. June 2006. Read it here
- UK Beam Trial; Back pain, exercise and manipulation (UK BEAM) randomised trial: effectiveness of physical treatments for back pain in primary care. British Medical Journal Nov 2004; 329; 1377 Read it here
- Clinical Standards Advisory Group; Backpain Report 1994.
The evidence that chiropractic can help in the treatment of some pediatric conditions, like colic, is mainly anecdotal and needs further research. However a study dated from 1989 explored this area with positive results: Klougart N, Nilsson N and Jacobsen J (1989) Infantile Colic Treated by Chiropractors: A Prospective Study of 316 Cases, J Manip Physiol Ther, 12:281-288
